Despite the fact that the vast majority of people have adapted to a modern lifestyle, there are tribes in different parts of the world that insist on maintaining their traditions and continue to live with their own age-old customs and habits. These tribes are gradually fading away and it is a matter of time before they either assimilate or disappear.
Living close to each race for more than two weeks, Jimmy Nelson met with them, honored their traditions, joined in their rituals and took care to capture these unique moments with his camera. According to Nelson, his mission was to ensure that the world will never forget the history of these tribes: “More importantly, I wanted to create an ambitious photographic document that will stand the test of time. To create an ethnographic record of a world that is quickly disappearing.”
The photographer Jimmy Nelson offers us a unique opportunity to discover more than 30 such tribes and to come to know them through his lens. The collection of “Before They Pass Away” is his life’s work for him and a valuable source of information for us.
Let’s look at some typical races and… their portraits.
